How to Properly Jump-Start a Car Step by Step

If you’re not sure how to jump-start a car battery, then it’s understandable that you might want to call roadside assistance. However, if you’re able to perform jump-start car service yourself, then we’d recommend trying that first. To jump-start the battery, you’ll need another driver with a working vehicle and a set of jumper cables.

Once you have those things, follow these steps for the proper way to jump-start a car:

  1. Have both vehicles parked and turned off with their front ends facing each other, unless their batteries are located somewhere else on their frames.
  2. Open the hoods of both vehicles, and remove any casings covering their batteries.
  3. Find the positive and negative terminals of both batteries, and make sure they don’t have any corrosion on them.
  4. Connect the red clamp of the jumper cables to the positive terminal on the battery that won’t start. Make sure the cables don’t teach each other while you’re doing this.
  5. Connect the other red clamp of the jumper cables to the positive terminal of the other battery.
  6. Connect the black clamp of the jumper cables to the negative post on the working battery.
  7. Connect the black clamp of the jumper cables to the negative post on your vehicle’s battery.
  8. Once the cables are connected to both batteries, start the engine of the car with the working battery.
  9. Let the vehicle run for about five minutes.
  10. After about five minutes, try starting your vehicle.
  11. Once your vehicle has started, remove the cables from both batteries.
  12. Be sure to leave your vehicle running for at least 10 to 15 minutes so that your battery has enough time to charge.
